  1. Slice the watermelon and apples into half-inch thick slices.
  2. Cut out the star shapes using different size cutters and add them to a large bowl.
  3. Make salad dressing by mixing lemon juice and maple syrup until combined in a small bowl.
  4. Add salad dressing to salad, toss and adjust sweetness if needed.
  5. Serve immediately or chill for a few hours before serving.

Fruit Salads Recipe Tips

  • For a fun effect use different sized cookie cutters for cutting out the star shape.
  • To avoid some of your white flesh fruit like apples and bananas turning brown, especially if you are not going to add dressing to them straight away, you should squeeze some lemon or lime juice over them.
  • Feel free to get mixed fresh fruit from the grocery store if you prefer.

Delicious Variations

  • Use fresh orange juice as a salad dressing.
  • I love topping this salad with delicious shredded coconut.
  • Add some citrus zest to enhance the flavor.
  • Use sugar or if not vegan you can use honey as a sweetener.

What Fruit To Use

  • Red Fruit – red fruit choices include watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, red grapes, red currants, and cherries.
  • White fruit – you can use apples, pears, white peaches, and white melon. You can also use banana but these go a bit mushy, so I avoid using them.
  • Blue fruit – you can use blueberries, blackberries, purple grapes.

Make Ahead And Storage

  • Prep Ahead – This is a recipe that tastes nice after a couple of hours. Prep ahead about 2-3 hours beforehand, refrigerate and mix occasionally so flavors in the salad develop.
  • Store – Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. It is best if you remove as much air as possible so probably easiest with a ziptop bag.
  • Freeze – I don’t recommend freezing this recipe.
