Honduran Food – What Is This Exciting Dish, Pupusas?

When you think of Honduran food, you may not be thinking of a lot of the tasty recipes that they have come up with. You may be tempted to compare Honduran food to Mexican food. In fact, you will see a lot of similarities in Mexican food and Honduran food. They use a lot of spice, beans, rice, cheese and they tend to stay away from red meat for the most part. In this article, we will talk about the pupusas, which is a cousin of tortilla.

Pupusas are not just tortillas with a fancy name, they are corn tortillas that are thick and usually stuffed with cheese, fried pork rind, refried beans, queso con loroco (which is a flower bud) and squash. You do not necessarily have to fill your pupusas with all of these items, you can mix and match as you like, and it all just depends on your taste.

If you are looking into making your own pupusas, it is a very simple to do! All you need is some rice flower and some ground corn and you should be able to make your dough! Now, you will be placing all of the items inside of the dough before you bake it, this is the reason why this dish is called a pupusa instead of just a tortilla. In the United States, pupusas typically are made from maseca, which is a brand name for corn flour-masa (rice flour) mix.

Now, the pupusas is popular all over the world and there are so many different variations of it, it is simply amazing. The Honduran version is one of the best though, for it gives the flavor, spice and balance that you are looking for in a Honduran food dish. Traditionally, you will see that pupusas are served with a pickled cabbage relish and tomato sauce and are usually eaten by hand.
